Marvel in 2013

Phase Two began with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013. Shane Black's film grossed about $1.2 billion and its take on the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, still divides fans. Kingsley came back in Shang-Chi and again in Wonder Man in 2026. Thor: The Dark World followed in November and became the lowest-rated MCU film on Rotten Tomatoes, a distinction it held until Eternals.

The MCU also moved into television. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered on ABC on September 24, bringing back Clark Gregg's Coulson from the films, and ran seven seasons. Late in the year, Disney announced four Netflix series leading to The Defenders. For Fox, James Mangold's The Wolverine took Logan to Japan.
