A 19-title shortcut through the main MCU saga, about 52 hours, from Iron Man to the edge of Avengers: Doomsday. That’s about 23% of the roughly 227 hours it takes to watch the whole main timeline. It skips some character origins to save time; we flag those gaps below and tell you what to add back.
This path keeps release order, so you meet each twist the way audiences did. Skipping titles does leave gaps: a few characters, like Doctor Strange and this Spider-Man, arrive with their origin story already behind them. The gaps and quick fixes are listed below.
Every title carries a tag so you can decide what to skip. Essential means the main story depends on it, Recommended adds a lot but you’ll follow without it, and Optional is safe to skip. Each entry also shows its release date and, where known, when the story is set.

19Each one either starts a thread the rest of the MCU depends on or pays one off.
A shortcut always costs something. These are the gaps a first-timer is most likely to notice, and the one or two titles that fill each one:
Thor: The Dark World is the other Thor skip. Thor: Ragnarok covers what you need from it.
If you’ve got more time: Captain Marvel between Infinity War and Endgame, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever before Loki Season 2, and Captain America: Brave New World before Thunderbolts*. For the complete list, use release order; for only the titles graded essential, see the MCU essentials.
Release order. This path keeps that order but drops many solo films and side stories, so you get the main Avengers arc in a fraction of the time. The trade-off is that some characters show up without their origin story, which the “What you’ll miss” section covers.
Mostly solo sequels and side stories: Iron Man 2 and 3, The Dark World, both Ant-Man sequels, Captain Marvel, Eternals and most Disney+ series. They’re worth watching if you enjoy them, but you won’t be lost without them.
Almost. WandaVision and both seasons of Loki are on this list because the films that follow lean on them heavily.
It covers the main threads, but not all of them. Add Captain America: Brave New World and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for the rest, or use our Doomsday prep guide, which is built for exactly that question.
Possibly in three places: No Way Home leans on the two earlier Tom Holland Spider-Man films, Multiverse of Madness assumes you know who Doctor Strange is, and Thunderbolts* introduces Yelena Belova as if you’ve seen Black Widow. Each is a two-hour fix, listed on this page.
