Why it matters now
Disney's biggest animated crossover of the era: the Phineas and Ferb crew depowered the actual Avengers, a novelty that drew strong ratings for Disney Channel.
About Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel
Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel is a two-part episode from season 4 of the Disney cartoon. While Agent P is fighting Dr. Doofenshmirtz, one of Doofenshmirtz's inventions zaps Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk in the middle of a battle in New York. The heroes lose their powers, and S.H.I.E.L.D. traces the beam to the boys' space station. Red Skull, Whiplash, Venom and MODOK see their chance.
It premiered on Disney Channel on August 16, 2013. Robert F. Hughes and Sue Perrotto directed, and series co-creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh worked with Marvel writers on the characters. The guest voices include Drake Bell as Spider-Man, Adrian Pasdar as Iron Man, Travis Willingham as Thor, Fred Tatasciore as the Hulk, Liam O'Brien as Red Skull, Danny Trejo as Venom, Peter Stormare as Whiplash and Chi McBride as Nick Fury. It drew 3.8 million viewers, the show's best audience in six months, and The A.V. Club gave it a B+.
Good to know
- It was the first animated crossover between Disney and Marvel after Disney bought Marvel in 2009.
- Stan Lee makes a cameo as a hot dog vendor.
- The writers wanted Iron Man to wield Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, but they weren't allowed and had to re-board the scene.
- The songs include "Surfin' Asteroids," "My Streets" and the villain number "My Evil Buddies and Me."
How to watch it
It's a non-canon crossover, so put it wherever you like in a Marvel marathon. It's a good break between heavier films. You don't need to know much Phineas and Ferb beyond the basics: the brothers build wild inventions and their pet platypus is a secret agent. A sneak peek first aired during Avengers Assemble, and it fits well next to that show for younger viewers.
