Marvel in 2014
Two of the most important MCU films came out in 2014. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, released on April 4, was the Russo brothers' first film for the MCU. It turned the MCU's spy agency upside down and introduced Anthony Mackie's Falcon, who took up the shield in 2021 and headlined Captain America: Brave New World in 2025. In August, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy took a team Feige had called obscure and turned it into one of the year's top three earners.
Outside the MCU, X-Men: Days of Future Past combined both X-Men casts and became the franchise's top earner, and Disney Animation's Big Hero 6, the studio's first animated film with Marvel characters, won the Oscar. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got middling reviews, and Sony's planned spin-offs started to fall apart.
