Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000) came out eight years before Iron Man and is a big reason superhero films became a genre studios took seriously. Over the next two decades Fox built a sprawling series: the original trilogy, three Wolverine films, a 1960s-set prequel cast led by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, two Deadpool films and a horror spin-off.
The X-Men timeline is famously messy. Days of Future Past (2014) rewrote history on purpose, and some later films contradict earlier ones anyway, so don’t worry if the dates don’t add up; nobody’s do. After Disney bought Fox in 2019 the rights returned to Marvel, and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) gave the Fox era its send-off. Several Fox X-Men actors, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden, are back for Avengers: Doomsday.

X-Men movies FAQ
How many X-Men movies are there?
