Groot Watch Order: Every MCU Appearance

The 9 titles below run in story order, starting with Guardians of the Galaxy and, for now, ending with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Groot’s story runs from the original Guardian to Baby Groot and beyond, and the I Am Groot shorts are part of it.

Set aside about 22h 30m for the full list of 6 films, 2 series seasons and 1 special or short, which came out from 2014 to 2023.

Who is Groot?

Groot started out as a monster of the week. Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby put him in Tales to Astonish #13, cover dated November 1960, as an alien tree from Planet X who came to Earth to collect humans for study. Marvel later rebuilt him as a Flora colossus, a sentient tree whose entire spoken vocabulary is the phrase 'I am Groot', which carries a different meaning every time he says it. Readers know him for that line and for his partnership with Rocket Raccoon.

Vin Diesel has voiced him since Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, with Krystian Godlewski handling performance capture on that first film. By Vol. 2 he is Baby Groot, performed on set by director James Gunn, and by Avengers: Infinity War he is a moody adolescent. Fred Tatasciore voices an alternate-universe version in the What If...? episode 'What If... Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?'

His most recent film is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023. He has no confirmed future appearance and is not among the announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday.

Spoiler Spoilers for Groot’s story: tap to reveal
  • Groot sacrifices himself shielding the team at the climax of the first film, and a cutting taken from him grows into Baby Groot.
  • He is among the billions lost to Thanos's Snap at the end of Infinity War.
  • In Vol. 3 he pulls Adam Warlock out of the collapsing Arete. When Quill leaves the team and names Rocket captain, Groot stays aboard with a reshuffled line-up that includes Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, Phyla and Blurp.

Groot FAQ

Who voices Groot in the MCU?

Vin Diesel has voiced Groot since Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. Krystian Godlewski provided performance capture for the first film, James Gunn performed Baby Groot, and Fred Tatasciore voiced an alternate-universe variant in What If...?

Why is Groot a baby in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?

It goes back to the ending of the first Guardians film, so the full answer is in the spoiler box on this page. Vol. 2 plays him as a child rather than a straight copy of the original Groot.

Do I need to watch I Am Groot?

No, it is optional. I Am Groot is a set of ten animated shorts of roughly four to six minutes each, released on Disney+ across two seasons in 2022 and 2023, following Baby Groot between the first Guardians film and a Vol. 2 mid-credits scene.

What order should I watch Groot in?

Follow the list above, which is in story order. It differs from release order in 2 places: I Am Groot: Season 1 and I Am Groot: Season 2 came out later than their story is set, so they sit earlier here. Release order works too, if you’d rather see things the way audiences did.

How many titles feature Groot?

9 so far (6 films, 2 series seasons and 1 special or short), released from 2014 to 2023, covering Phases 2 to 5 of the MCU. That’s about 22h 30m of viewing.

How long does it take to watch every Groot appearance?

About 22h 30m for all 9 released titles. At two hours an evening, that’s roughly 12 sittings.

Do I need to watch the whole MCU to follow Groot?

No. These 9 titles tell the character’s own story, and the 2 team-up films on the list cover where it meets the wider MCU. Of these, 3 are graded Essential, so start with those if you’re short on time.
