TV SeriesOptional
Wolverine reassembles the X-Men after an attack on the mansion, guided by visions of a ruined future. One season with a strong serialized story built on Days of Future Past.
About Wolverine and the X-Men
Wolverine and the X-Men opens with the team broken up. An explosion has wrecked the X-Mansion, and Professor X and Jean Grey have disappeared. A year later, Wolverine and Beast bring the X-Men back together to stand against the government-backed Mutant Response Division, with Emma Frost's help in tracking down the Professor. That search reveals a grim future where Sentinels rule, and the series cuts between that future and the present day. Magneto's Genosha, Mister Sinister, the Hellfire Club and Apocalypse all factor in along the way.
Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson developed the series for Marvel Studios, with Stan Lee and Kevin Feige among the executive producers. Steve Blum voices Wolverine and narrates, with Jim Ward as Professor X, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Tom Kane as Magneto, Kari Wahlgren as Emma Frost and Nolan North as Cyclops. It ran for one 26-episode season and premiered on Nicktoons in the US on January 23, 2009, after debuting abroad in 2008. IGN gave it 9 out of 10.
Good to know
- A second season was confirmed and teased at Comic-Con 2009 with Cable, Deadpool, Havok, Magik and Bastion, but it was never made.
- In 2010 Marvel Animation confirmed the show wasn't returning, and financing problems were the reported reason.
- Jennifer Hale voices Jean Grey here and again 15 years later in X-Men '97.
- Co-developer Craig Kyle also created X-23 for X-Men: Evolution.
How to watch it
This show stands alone, so you don't need any other X-Men cartoon first, and it's best watched straight through because the present-day and future arcs build toward the finale. The Sentinel-ruled future episodes are the backbone. Know going in that the last episode ends on a cliffhanger for a season that never came. It's a strong pick for fans who want a Wolverine-centered team story with a darker tone than the '90s series.
