Why it’s worth knowing about
A Madhouse anime set after the Dark Phoenix saga.
About Marvel Anime: X-Men
Jean Grey is dead, lost while the Dark Phoenix was being steered by the Inner Circle, and the X-Men have drifted apart. When a young mutant named Armor is abducted, Professor X calls the team back together and sends Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm and Beast to Japan. There they run into the U-Men, who kidnap young mutants to harvest their organs, and a condition called Damon Hall Syndrome that disrupts some mutants' second mutation.
Madhouse produced it with Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan, with Fuminori Kizaki directing and Mitsutaka Hirota and Warren Ellis writing. It ran 12 episodes on Animax from April to June 2011, and G4 premiered it in the US that October. The English dub features Scott Porter as Cyclops, Steve Blum as Wolverine, Cam Clarke as Professor X, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey and Fred Tatasciore as Beast.
Good to know
- It is the only Marvel Anime series built around a team rather than a single hero.
- The story is kicked off by the abduction of Armor, a young mutant, by the U-Men.
- Emma Frost and Mastermind appear among the Inner Circle threats.
- Wolverine is voiced by Steve Blum here rather than Milo Ventimiglia, who voices him in Marvel Anime: Wolverine and Blade.
How to watch it
Watch it third in the Marvel Anime anthology, after Iron Man and Wolverine, to follow the release order. Some knowledge of the Dark Phoenix story helps with the opening, though the series explains enough. The U-Men arc is the core of the season. It suits X-Men fans who want a more grown-up, Japan-set take on the team, and it pairs well with X-Men '97 if you're on an animated X-Men run.
