M’Baku Watch Order: Every MCU Appearance
The 4 titles below run in story order, starting with Black Panther and, for now, ending with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. M’Baku, leader of the Jabari, steals almost every scene he is in.
Set aside about 10h 25m for the full list, which came out from 2018 to 2022. Avengers: Doomsday is next.
Who is M’Baku?
M'Baku arrived as a villain. Roy Thomas and John Buscema introduced him in The Avengers #62, cover dated March 1969, under the name Man-Ape. In the comics he takes his strength by killing a sacred white gorilla, bathing in its blood and eating its flesh, then allies with the outlawed White Gorilla Cult in a bid to seize Wakanda's throne and return the country to a more primitive state. He has been a long-running Black Panther adversary and has served with the Lethal Legion and the Masters of Evil.
Winston Duke plays him from Black Panther in 2018, and the film reworks the character from the ground up. Here he leads the Jabari, the mountain tribe that rejects Wakanda's technology and reveres gorillas, worshipping Hanuman rather than Bast. He challenges T'Challa to ritual combat at the coronation, and the way that fight ends shapes his role for the rest of the film. Duke returns in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022 gives him his widest role yet, as one of the loudest voices in Wakanda's debate over how to deal with Talokan. Winston Duke is confirmed to return as M'Baku in Avengers: Doomsday, which Marvel has dated for December 18, 2026.
Spoiler Spoilers for M’Baku’s story: tap to reveal
- M'Baku loses the coronation duel and T'Challa persuades him to yield rather than die. That mercy comes back around when the Jabari shelter T'Challa's comatose body and later ride in to reinforce him against Killmonger.
- In Wakanda Forever he argues for peace with Talokan and loses that argument to Shuri, then opens the Jabari mountains as a refuge after Namor's attack on the capital.
- The film ends with Shuri away from Wakanda and M'Baku stepping forward to challenge for the throne. The outcome of that challenge is not shown.
