Who is Doctor Doom?
Victor von Doom was created by writer and editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, and he arrived in The Fantastic Four #5, cover dated July 1962. He is the son of a Latverian healer and a Romani witch, a prodigy in both science and sorcery who won a scholarship to Empire State University and met Reed Richards there. A lab accident scarred his face. He had Tibetan monks forge the iron mask, took the name Doctor Doom, and then seized Latveria itself, which is the detail that separates him from most Marvel villains.
Doom reached film before the MCU existed. Julian McMahon played him in Fantastic Four (2005) and returned for Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Toby Kebbell took the role in the 2015 Fantastic Four, a reboot that landed badly enough to end that version of the franchise. Marvel Studios waited a decade before trying again, and the approach it chose was unusual: hand the part to the actor who had already defined the other end of the Marvel ledger for fifteen years.
Robert Downey Jr. was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024 as Doctor Doom, alongside the return of the Russo brothers and the Doomsday subtitle. Kevin Feige's pitch was simple: he played the most iconic hero, so let him play the most iconic villain. He is set to lead Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
