Many fans’ favorite Spider-Man cartoon, and an early take on the Spider-Verse idea.

About Spider-Man: The Animated Series

This version of Peter Parker is a student at Empire State University, and the show tells his story in serialized arcs rather than one-off adventures. Seasons carry subtitles like "Neogenic Nightmare," "The Sins of the Fathers" and "Partners in Danger," and the villain roster grows to include the Kingpin, Hobgoblin, Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, Venom and Carnage. Heroes such as the X-Men, the Punisher, Blade and the Fantastic Four drop in to help, and the final season runs through the "Secret Wars" and "Spider Wars" arcs.

Marvel Films produced it for Fox Kids, with animation by TMS-Kyokuchi and music from Saban, and its 65 episodes ran from November 1994 to January 1998. John Semper was the lead writer and producer, credited on 60 episodes, with Avi Arad and Stan Lee as executive producers. Christopher Daniel Barnes voiced Peter, with Edward Asner as J. Jonah Jameson, Jennifer Hale as Black Cat, Roscoe Lee Browne as the Kingpin, Hank Azaria as Eddie Brock and Mark Hamill as Hobgoblin. People magazine called it one of the best animated comic book adaptations ever.

How to watch it

Watch it in order, because the arcs carry from episode to episode. It ran alongside X-Men: The Animated Series on Fox Kids, so the two make natural companions, and it's good homework before X-Men '97. The Venom and Carnage stories and the season 5 "Secret Wars" and "Spider Wars" arcs are the highlights. Fans of the Spider-Verse films will enjoy seeing an early take on the multiverse idea, and Spider-Man Unlimited (1999) works as a loose follow-up.
