Why it’s worth knowing about
A final time-travel season that hops through S.H.I.E.L.D.’s history, from the 1930s onward.
About Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 7
The final season sends the team hopping through the past, trying to stop the Chronicoms from wiping S.H.I.E.L.D. out of history. The trip starts in 1931 New York, before S.H.I.E.L.D. even existed, and moves through a 1955 base near Area 51, the 1970s and the 1980s. Coulson is back as a Life Model Decoy, the Chronicom Enoch helps out, and the villains include the Chronicom Sibyl and Nathaniel Malick, son of Hydra's Wilfred Malick. Along the way, the team picks up an unexpected new member from Agent Carter.
ABC aired 13 episodes from May 27 to August 12, 2020, with Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell running the show. The cast agreed to return only if this was the last season, which was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward lead, with Iain De Caestecker in a limited role. Viewership was the series' lowest, but critics liked the genre-hopping and called it a satisfying ending; it holds 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Good to know
- Enver Gjokaj returns as Daniel Sousa from Agent Carter, starting in "Alien Commies from the Future!", set in 1955.
- Patton Oswalt, Patrick Warburton and Dichen Lachman are among the returning faces, and young versions of John Garrett and Victoria Hand appear.
- Elizabeth Henstridge directed the time-loop episode "As I Have Always Been."
- The season earned two Golden Reel Award nominations for sound editing.
How to watch it
Watch season 6 first, since it ends exactly where this one begins. Seeing both seasons of Agent Carter beforehand makes the 1950s episodes and Sousa's return far more rewarding. Many episodes play with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s history, so it's best for fans who've watched the whole series. Don't skip "As I Have Always Been," a standout time-loop episode, and save the finale for when you're ready to say goodbye to all seven seasons.
