About Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider while painting graffiti in an abandoned subway station with his uncle Aaron. He soon finds out the Kingpin has built a collider there to reach parallel universes. The machine pulls other Spider-People into Miles's world, including a worn-out Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and Spider-Ham, and they all need to stop it before it tears New York apart.
Sony Pictures Animation made it with Columbia Pictures and Marvel. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman directed from a script by Phil Lord and Rothman, and Lord and Christopher Miller produced. Shameik Moore voices Miles, with Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Kathryn Hahn and Liev Schreiber. Released in December 2018, it made about $395 million on a $90 million budget and won the Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics' Choice awards for animated feature.
Good to know
- The animation blends CGI with comic-print techniques like halftones, Ben-Day dots and deliberately misaligned colors, and swaps motion blur for smears.
- Each Spider-Person has a distinct style: Noir is black and white, Spider-Ham is classic cartoon, and Peni draws on anime.
- Stan Lee appears in a posthumous cameo selling Miles a costume, and the film is dedicated to Lee and Steve Ditko.
- Its hand-drawn effects influenced the look of the MCU series Ms. Marvel.
- Nicolas Cage later played a live-action version of Spider-Man Noir in the series Spider-Noir (2026).
Spoiler Spoilers for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: tap to reveal
- The Kingpin wants the collider to reach versions of his wife and son, who died in a car crash after seeing who he really was.
- Miles's uncle Aaron is secretly the Prowler, and he's killed by the Kingpin after refusing to shoot Miles.
How to watch it
It's self-contained and set outside the MCU, so you can watch it any time. Follow it with Across the Spider-Verse (2023), then Beyond the Spider-Verse when it arrives in June 2027. Seeing a live-action Spider-Man origin first helps some of the jokes land, but it isn't required. It's an easy pick for families, animation fans and anyone who thinks they're tired of origin stories.
