Man-Thing (2005)
MovieOptionalLegacy
In the Louisiana bayou, a missing deputy's investigation leads to the monstrous guardian of the Nexus of All Realities: the empathic Man-Thing. This 2005 Marvel film was made outside Marvel Studios’ main MCU line-up, so it’s optional for the watch order and works fine on its own. At 1h 37m, it is free to watch with ads on Tubi in the US.

Why it matters now
A little-seen horror entry, originally planned for theaters, then dumped to TV, yet a genuine attempt at Marvel swamp-monster horror.
About Man-Thing
Man-Thing is a low-budget horror film set in Bywater, Louisiana. New sheriff Kyle Williams arrives to find 47 people missing since oil tycoon Fred Schist bought sacred Native American land in a swamp called Dark Waters. As the bodies turn up, Kyle and local woman Teri Richards start to suspect something in the bayou is protecting the land, and the creature they find burns anyone who feels fear.
Brett Leonard directed from a script by Hans Rodionoff, with a cast led by Matthew Le Nevez, Rachael Taylor, Jack Thompson and Alex O'Loughlin. Budget limits moved the shoot from New Orleans to the Sydney area, and the film cost about $5 million. It premiered on the Sci Fi Channel on April 30, 2005, and played theaters only in a few international markets. Critics were unkind, and its Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 14%.
Good to know
- The title creature is on screen for only about seven minutes, after budget cuts removed many of its scenes.
- Several characters are named after Man-Thing comics creators Mike Ploog, Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik, and director Brett Leonard plays "Val Mayerik."
- A photo of Stan Lee appears on a missing-persons board.
- Rachael Taylor later played Trish Walker in Netflix's Jessica Jones.
- Man-Thing returned in the MCU's Werewolf by Night (2022), a very different take on the character.
How to watch it
This is a standalone horror film with no ties to any other Marvel movie, so watch it whenever you like. It makes an interesting before-and-after pair with Werewolf by Night, which gives Man-Thing a much warmer role. Go in expecting a swamp creature-feature rather than a superhero movie. Really, it's for Marvel completists and mid-2000s TV horror fans who want to dig into Marvel's odder early film projects.
