Marvel in 2005
The 2005 releases were thin, but the deal that created the MCU was signed that year. Marvel set up a non-recourse debt structure with Merrill Lynch that gave it $525 million to make up to ten films over eight years, with Paramount as distributor. In September the company renamed itself Marvel Entertainment, and in November it got the Iron Man film rights back from New Line.
The films that did come out weren't much help. Elektra, released on January 14 with Jennifer Garner, earned about $57 million and flopped. Tim Story's Fantastic Four did better in July, making about $330 million despite a 28 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Its cast included Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, who played Captain America six years later.
