Who is Cyclops?
Scott Summers was there from page one. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Cyclops in The X-Men #1, cover dated September 1963, as Professor X's first recruit and field leader. His optic blasts pour out of his eyes whether he wants them to or not, held back only by his eyelids or by ruby quartz in a visor or a pair of sunglasses, which is the whole character in one detail. He has led the X-Men, X-Factor and later Krakoa, and his relationship with Jean Grey is the longest-running romance in the franchise.
James Marsden played him in X-Men in 2000, X2 in 2003 and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, then returned for X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. Tim Pocock appeared as a teenage Scott in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. For the prequel timeline the role was recast with Tye Sheridan, who played a young Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 and Dark Phoenix in 2019, and turned up in a cameo in Deadpool 2 in 2018. Marsden and Sheridan never share the screen.
Sheridan's version last appeared in Dark Phoenix in 2019, the final prequel film, released just months after Disney completed its purchase of 21st Century Fox in March 2019. That deal ended the Fox X-Men timeline and handed Scott Summers to Marvel Studios. His confirmed next step belongs to the original actor rather than the recast one: James Marsden is confirmed to return as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday, opening December 18, 2026. Sheridan has no announced return.
