The TVA Explained
Updated
The Time Variance Authority is the bureaucratic organization policing the MCU's timelines, and the single most important institution in the Multiverse Saga.
What the TVA is
The TVA exists outside time, in a retro-futuristic headquarters staffed by "agents" who believe they were made for the job. Its mission: prune any timeline branch that deviates from the Sacred Timeline. In Loki Season 1, we're told three godlike Time-Keepers founded it.
Spoiler Spoilers for Loki Season 1: tap to reveal
The agents are actually variants kidnapped from their own timelines with their memories wiped, and the Time-Keepers are robots. The TVA was really founded by He Who Remains, a Kang variant who won a multiversal war and built it to stop his variants from ever rising again.
Loki Season 1: the lie collapses
Loki is arrested by the TVA for stealing the Tesseract in Endgame's time heist, creating a branch. Working with Agent Mobius, he starts uncovering what the TVA really is, and by the finale the Sacred Timeline is in pieces. Follow the full story in our Loki watch order.
Spoiler Spoilers for the Loki Season 1 finale: tap to reveal
He Who Remains runs everything from the End of Time. When Sylvie kills him, the Sacred Timeline shatters into infinite branches.
Loki Season 2: the God of Stories
With the timeline branching out of control, the TVA faces collapse: its Temporal Loom can't handle the load. Loki learns to control his timeslipping, and the finale settles both the TVA's future and the multiverse's.
Spoiler Spoilers for the Loki Season 2 finale: tap to reveal
Loki makes a god's choice: rather than destroy the branches or let them die, he takes the throne at the End of Time and holds the timelines together himself, weaving them into a living tree, Yggdrasil, as the God of Stories. The TVA survives with a new mission: protect the branches instead of pruning them.
Key TVA characters
- Mobius M. Mobius: the weary analyst who befriends Loki and really, really loves jet skis.
- Hunter B-15: the hunter who leads the TVA's moral awakening.
- Ouroboros ("OB"): the TVA's eccentric engineer; author of its handbook.
- Casey: the mild-mannered desk worker with hidden depths.
- Ravonna Renslayer: the judge hunting her own agenda across time.
- Miss Minutes: the cheery animated mascot who knows more than her smile lets on.
Why the TVA matters for Doomsday
The TVA keeps turning up wherever the multiverse does. It appeared again in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), policing the Void where pruned variants end up. Any multiversal threat, including Doctor Doom's, runs through it as well. Understand the TVA and you understand the saga's rules: see our multiverse explainer.
