A short-lived follow-up to the 1994 series.
About Spider-Man Unlimited
Spider-Man Unlimited moves the wall-crawler off his home turf entirely. On Counter-Earth, Peter finds a world where the High Evolutionary's Bestials, part-human animal hybrids, rule over ordinary people, with his elite Knights of Wundagore enforcing order. Venom and Carnage have made the trip too, serving a being called the Synoptic. To survive, Peter wears a new nanotech suit borrowed from Reed Richards, complete with stealth tech, upgraded web-shooters and sonic weapons built for fighting symbiotes.
Saban Entertainment produced the 13-episode series with Marvel Studios for Fox Kids as a US/Canadian co-production. Rino Romano voices Spider-Man, with Richard Newman as the High Evolutionary, John Payne II as John Jameson, Brian Drummond as Venom and Michael Donovan as Carnage. It premiered in October 1999 but was pulled after a few episodes, overshadowed by Pokémon and Digimon, and Fox Kids only aired the rest later, with the finale in March 2001. Reviews were mixed, though the sci-fi setting has earned it a small cult following.
Good to know
- The new setting came about partly because a Sony film deal kept the producers from using the classic suit and early comics material.
- Marvel rejected a story idea with two Peter Parkers, and a planned Spider-Man 2099 series was dropped after Batman Beyond covered similar ground.
- The last episode, "Destiny Unleashed," ends on a cliffhanger; season 2 scripts were written but never produced.
- "One Is the Loneliest Number" was made as episode 10 but aired as episode 11, causing continuity errors.
How to watch it
It's a follow-up to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, so watch that first, though Unlimited stands apart in tone and setting. Swap episodes 10 and 11 to follow production order. Go in knowing the story stops on an unresolved cliffhanger.
