About Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends
This was Spider-Man's first team-up cartoon. Peter Parker fights crime alongside two young mutants, Bobby Drake's Iceman and Angelica Jones's Firestar, a heroine created for the show, and the trio take on a mix of Spider-Man foes and wider Marvel villains. The pilot, "Triumph of the Green Goblin," sets the tone, and later episodes bring in guest heroes such as Sunfire and new characters like Lightwave.
Marvel Productions made it for NBC's Saturday morning lineup, where it ran for three seasons and 24 episodes between 1981 and 1983, with repeats into 1986. Dan Gilvezan voiced Spider-Man, Frank Welker voiced Iceman, Kathy Garver voiced Firestar and June Foray played Aunt May. Stan Lee narrated the second and third seasons and recorded narration for first-season reruns. It was nominated for Best Children's Television Series at the 1982 Young Artist Awards, and retrospective rankings from Gizmodo and Collider place it near the top of Spider-Man cartoons, crediting the trio's chemistry.
Good to know
- Firestar exists because licensing problems kept the Human Torch off the show; she later joined the comics in Uncanny X-Men #193 (1985).
- Names considered for Firestar during pre-production included Heatwave, Firefly and Starblaze.
- "The Quest of the Red Skull" is usually left out of syndication packages because of its Hitler and Nazi imagery.

- Videoman, a villain introduced here, makes a cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
How to watch it
Pair it with the solo Spider-Man (1981) series, made by the same studio in the same period. Start with the pilot, then pick episodes by villain or guest star, since most stories stand alone. "Mission: Save the Guardstar," which introduces Iceman's half-sister Lightwave, is a fun one for X-Men fans. It's a natural older companion to the 2021 preschool show with a similar name and team-up setup, and it suits anyone who likes light, colorful team adventures.
