Captain America Serial (1944)
TV SeriesOptional
District Attorney Grant Gardner secretly fights the villainous Scarab as Captain America across 15 cliffhanger chapters, Marvel's first-ever screen adaptation. This 1944 Marvel series was made outside Marvel Studios’ main MCU line-up, so it’s optional for the watch order and works fine on its own. It runs 3h 45m.

Why it’s worth knowing about
The very first Marvel character ever filmed, a 15-chapter Republic serial that predates the MCU by over 60 years, even if it renamed Steve Rogers 'Grant Gardner.'
About Captain America (Serial)
Republic Pictures' 15-chapter serial pits Captain America against Dr. Cyrus Maldor, a museum curator secretly operating as the Scarab. A wave of suicides among scientists and businessmen, each found holding a small scarab, leads back to a hypnotic drug called the Purple Death and a Mayan expedition Maldor organized. Maldor is after two devices that could be turned into superweapons, the Dynamic Vibrator and the Electronic Firebolt, and each chapter ends on a cliffhanger.
Elmer Clifton and John English directed, with Dick Purcell as crusading District Attorney Grant Gardner, Lorna Gray as his secretary Gail Richards and horror veteran Lionel Atwill as Maldor. The serial premiered in early 1944 and cost about $222,906, making it Republic's most expensive serial and its most over budget. It was also the studio's last superhero serial. Timely, the comic's publisher, objected to the changes to its hero, but Republic said the material it was sent required none of them. It was re-released in 1953 as Return of Captain America and is remembered for its fight scenes and for Atwill's performance.
Good to know
- It is the first live-action adaptation of any Marvel character.
- There's no Steve Rogers, no super-soldier origin, no Bucky, no Nazis and no shield; Cap carries a pistol instead.
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) nods to it by showing Steve starring in a movie serial during his USO days.
- Its popularity in Turkey inspired the Turkish films Binbaşı Tayfun (1968) and 3 Dev Adam (1973).
- Dick Purcell died a few weeks after filming wrapped.
How to watch it
This is the very start of any chronological Marvel-on-screen marathon, decades before the TV movies of the 1970s. It is not tied to any later version, so you can watch it on its own. Fifteen chapters is a lot in one go; a chapter or two a night is closer to how 1940s audiences saw it. Old Hollywood action fans will have a good time, and so will anyone who wants to see where Marvel's screen history begins. Watch The First Avenger afterward to catch its serial-era homage.
