About Thor: Tales of Asgard
Thor: Tales of Asgard is a coming-of-age story about a teenage Thor desperate to prove himself as a warrior. He talks his half-brother Loki and the Warriors Three, Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg, into hunting for a sword hidden in Jotunheim, but the quest threatens to restart a long-dormant war between Asgard and Jotunheim. Sif, Odin, the Enchantress, Fenris and Algrim also figure into the story.
It's the eighth and final film in the Marvel Animated Features line from Lionsgate and Marvel, with animation by The Answer Studio. Sam Liu directed from a script by Greg Johnson, and Craig Kyle produced. Matthew Wolf voices Thor, Rick Gomez is Loki, Tara Strong is Sif, Christopher Britton is Odin and Ashleigh Ball is the Enchantress. It was released direct-to-video on May 17, 2011, and runs 77 minutes. Reviews were mixed to positive: IGN gave it 7 out of 10, and Screen Rant found it enjoyable if not one to rewatch often.
Good to know
- It works as a prequel to Hulk vs., Wolverine and the X-Men and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which share its continuity.
- It closed out the eight-film Marvel Animated Features series that began with Ultimate Avengers in 2006.
- Thor is a teenager here; one reviewer suggested it could have been called Young Thor.
How to watch it
Watch it first if you're working through the shared animated universe of Hulk vs., Wolverine and the X-Men and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, since it's a prequel to all three. MCU fans will enjoy seeing a younger, different take on Thor, Loki and the Warriors Three. Parents should know Common Sense Media flagged its violence, drinking and innuendo.
