Why it matters now

The most comics-accurate Punisher film; Ray Stevenson's MAX-comics brutality divided critics but won over hardcore fans of the character.

About Punisher: War Zone

Punisher: War Zone finds Frank Castle five years into his war on organized crime after the mob killed his family. During a raid on a crime family, he kills an undercover FBI agent by mistake, and he also leaves gangster Billy Russoti horribly scarred. Russoti remakes himself as Jigsaw, frees his unhinged brother Loony Bin Jim, and goes after the dead agent's family, while Castle is hunted by both the mob and the NYPD's Punisher Task Force.

Lexi Alexander directed from a script by Nick Santora, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, aiming for the look of the comics and 1980s action films. Ray Stevenson plays Castle, with Dominic West as Jigsaw, Doug Hutchison as Loony Bin Jim, Julie Benz, Dash Mihok, Colin Salmon and Wayne Knight. Made under Marvel's Marvel Knights banner and released by Lionsgate on December 5, 2008, it reboots the 2004 Punisher rather than continuing it. On a $35 million budget it made only about $10.1 million worldwide and drew mostly negative reviews, though it has since built a cult following.

Good to know

How to watch it

This is a standalone reboot, so you don't need The Punisher (2004) or the 1989 film first, though watching all three in order shows how differently each era handled Frank Castle. It's extremely violent and pulpy, closer to a comic-panel action movie than a gritty drama. Fans who enjoyed Jon Bernthal's Punisher in Daredevil and The Punisher will find a cartoonier but faithful take, and it's a fun watch for anyone who loves 1980s-style action.
