About The Punisher
The Punisher (2004) gives Frank Castle a new origin story and moves him to Tampa. Castle is an FBI agent whose work crosses Howard Saint, a crime boss who doesn't forgive. Saint's revenge costs Frank his whole family and very nearly his life. What follows is less a shootout movie than a patient takedown, as Frank turns Saint's business, trust and inner circle against him.
It hit theaters on April 16, 2004. Jonathan Hensleigh directed in his first time behind the camera and co-wrote the script with Michael France. The plot drew mainly on The Punisher: Year One and Garth Ennis's Welcome Back, Frank. Thomas Jane plays Castle and John Travolta plays Saint, with Rebecca Romijn, Will Patton, Roy Scheider, Ben Foster, Kevin Nash and John Pinette. It was shot in Tampa over 52 days for about $33 million and made roughly $54.7 million worldwide. Critics weren't impressed, giving it 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore.
Good to know
- Kevin Nash plays the Russian, one of the hired killers sent after Castle.
- An extended DVD cut from 2006 adds 17 minutes, mostly scenes with the character Jimmy Weeks.
- A planned sequel fell apart when Jane and Hensleigh left. It turned into the unrelated reboot Punisher: War Zone (2008).
- Jane played Castle again in Dirty Laundry, an unofficial 2012 fan short with Ron Perlman.
How to watch it
It's a standalone revenge movie, so watch it on its own or as the middle stop in a Punisher marathon between the 1989 film and Punisher: War Zone. If you've read Garth Ennis's Welcome Back, Frank, you'll spot what it borrows. Try the extended cut if you can. Fans of Jon Bernthal's Punisher will find a slower, more methodical take on the same character.
