Why it matters now

David Hasselhoff's eyepatched Nick Fury, a TV movie that reimagined the cigar-chomping comics version, years before Samuel L. Jackson redefined the role.

About Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a TV movie that premiered on Fox on May 26, 1998. HYDRA attacks a S.H.I.E.L.D. base and revives Baron von Strucker. Then Strucker's daughter, Andrea von Strucker (Viper), threatens Manhattan with the Death's Head virus and demands a billion dollars. Fury is pulled out of retirement, and once Viper poisons him, he has only 48 hours to find an antidote.

David Hasselhoff plays Fury, eyepatch included. Lisa Rinna plays Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and Sandra Hess plays Viper. Rod Hardy directed from a script by David Goyer, who had written it several years before cameras rolled. It was shot in Vancouver in 1997 on a $6 million budget and meant as a backdoor pilot for a series that never happened. Critics were mostly unkind. They found some fun in Hasselhoff's performance but little in the dialogue, and the premiere came fourth in its time slot.

Good to know

How to watch it

Watch this as a pre-MCU curiosity. It comes from the late-'90s stretch when Marvel was trying to get its characters onto TV, so it pairs well with the 1990 Captain America film or Blade (1998). If you've seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Thunderbolts*, it's fun to spot Pierce and Valentina years before the MCU versions. Go in for the camp. It has the spy gadgets and the eyepatch, but it doesn't have the gravitas.
