Marvel in 2007

Fan memories of 2007 are mixed, even though the box office was huge. Spider-Man 3 opened on May 4 with an estimated budget of $258 million to $350 million, the most expensive film made up to that point, and grossed close to $900 million, the most of Raimi's trilogy. But it was the first of the three to get mixed reviews, and the cramped Venom subplot with Topher Grace is a big reason. Sony canceled Spider-Man 4 in 2010, and Raimi didn't make another Marvel film until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022.

Ghost Rider, with Nicolas Cage, and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer both made money but got weak reviews, and Fox never made a third Fantastic Four film. At Marvel, Kevin Feige became president of production in March.
