Marvel in 2002
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man opened on May 3, 2002, and made $114.8 million in its first weekend, which made it the first film ever to earn $100 million in a single weekend. Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker and Willem Dafoe played the Green Goblin. The film went on to gross more than $820 million worldwide, the most of any superhero film up to then.
Earlier in the year, Guillermo del Toro's Blade II showed the first film was no fluke, earning $155 million on a $54 million budget. Taken together, the two movies proved Marvel characters could carry a mainstream blockbuster and a cult sequel at once. Dafoe returned as the Green Goblin nearly two decades later in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which connected Raimi's films to the MCU.
