Marvel in 1982

The live-action Incredible Hulk ended its run in 1982 after five seasons and 80 episodes. In that time, Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno had become the definitive Banner and Hulk for a generation of viewers.

The Hulk didn't leave TV, though. On September 18, NBC premiered an animated Incredible Hulk from Marvel Productions and paired it with Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends in an hour-long block called The Incredible Hulk and the Amazing Spider-Man. Stan Lee, who co-created the Hulk, narrated, and this version could speak in short bursts, voiced by Bob Holt. The cartoon lasted one 13-episode season. Bixby would return to the role in a run of NBC TV movies at the end of the decade.

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, which shared that NBC block, is the show that introduced Firestar, a character created for the cartoon who later moved into the comics. For MCU fans, the Bixby and Ferrigno years still echo on screen: Ferrigno voiced the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk (2008), and that film shows Bruce Banner watching a clip of Bill Bixby in The Courtship of Eddie's Father.
