Marvel in 1977
Live-action Marvel became a network TV fixture in 1977, and CBS was the network that made it happen. A Spider-Man pilot film starring Nicholas Hammond aired on September 14, and Kenneth Johnson's The Incredible Hulk followed with a two-hour pilot on November 4. Both pilots also played in theaters overseas.
Johnson's Hulk was the one that stuck. He renamed Bruce Banner as David, cast Bill Bixby in the role and put bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno under the green paint, dropping the comic's supporting cast to tell a story about a man drifting from town to town. The MCU never forgot it. The Incredible Hulk (2008) recreated the show's origin experiment in its opening credits, Ferrigno voiced the Hulk in that film, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law paid tribute to the show's opening sequence in 2022.
